Compliance Checks: Conducting or Requesting 'How-To'

Conducting and/or Requesting

A) If you have compliance checks and you need to get plugged in:

  • Write a letter to the Chief of Police, ABC, Sheriff, or any other agency conducting the checks to introduce the YIA project and ask for a meeting to talk about how your group can become involved with the local initiative

B) If you don't have compliance checks and want to begin them:

  • Write a letter to the to the Chief of Police, ABC, Sheriff, or any other agency in your area to introduce the YIA project and talk about benefits of compliance checks in your community

In many areas there may be resistance to conducting compliance checks. When your first plan of attack isn't successful, who are other leaders in the community or what are other political pressure points you can target?

    • Write letters or visit the mayor, city council, or county commissioners
    • Write a 'Letter to the Editor'
    • Ask for help from the local MADD chapter
    • Contact your state OJJDP coordinator and them to help you pressure decisionmakers

C) If you don't have compliance checks and will not be getting them in your area (too rural or not enough alcohol outlets) and want to work on other projects:

  • Write a letter to the local law enforcement agencies to introduce the YIA project and talk about your interest in finding out what they are doing in regards to reducing access of alcohol to minors in your area
  • Once you find out what they are doing, see how the YIA group can participate in the local initiatives
